As the world record holder for the number of jokes told in an hour, "Not Going Out" star Tim Vine is no stranger to the stand-up comedy stage. This new stage show of daft puns, groan-inducing one-liners and deranged comic songs faithfully follows the formula of 2004's "Tim Vine Live" DVD. As such, it contains very few surprises.
The punning rate on this DVD is extraordinary - so much so that by the time you've recovered from one gag, Vine is often three or four further on. His box of improbable props has expanded since the 2004 DVD; if anything, Vine relies more on these to get laughs and slightly less on the simple absurdity of the word-play in which he excels. The "pen behind the ear" routine, in particular, is mystifying and could be a turn-off for those who aren't already fans - although it does provide the set-up for one of the best sight gags in the show. Where Vine has raised his game is in the musical numbers, which are a good deal more sophisticated than the ones in the 2004 show. "My Marvellous Metronome" and "I'm Allergic to Choruses" stand out as comic highlights, and with "Flag Hippo" Vine reaches hitherto uncharted levels of surrealism.
As with the 2004 DVD, there's an impressive package of extras which range from the sublime ("Flag Hippo in Love") to the ridiculous (an absurd, and not altogether successful, Sunday-morning-TV-style spoof interview with the man himself). Best of the bunch is Vine's video diary shot backstage during the panto season. There's also an intriguing short from a psychologist exploring the underlying reasons for an addiction to appalling puns.
For those who like their comedy ground-breaking or subversive, Tim Vine is never going to be the artist of choice. But there is something refreshingly old-fashioned about a comedian whose stock in trade is a simple joy in playing with the absurdities of the English language. He's probably one of the few comedians whose shows can safely be watched by all the family. His jokes certainly bring out the big kid in me.

Anybody that has seen either series of the excellent "Not Going Out" on BBC1 would be familiar with Tim Vine and his rapid-fire wit. He set a world record for the most number of jokes told in a certain period of time and he is on solid form on this DVD. On this live stage show he is at his best moving from one quip to the next barely letting the audience catch stop laughing from the last one. I must admit that I was already a fan of his and this DVD has done nothing to convince that he is anything but one of the best stand-up acts around today.

I'd never heard of Tim Vine before watching this, but was not disappointed. My wife is very hard to please when it comes to comedy, but this had us both laughing. Probably more of an 'old-fashioned' comic, with a great array of jokes. The audience seemed to be enjoying themselves, which is always a good sign. Whilst this lacks some of the intelligence of comics like Eddie Izzard, even my thirteen year old son was laughing along. Hopefully there is more to come from Vine in the future.

If you've ever seen Tim Vine stand-up, you'll pretty much have made up your mind about him already.
A series of one-liners are tossed out at rapid speed and the atmosphere is as such that if you don't find one funny, a new one that you probably will find funny will be along any second later.
He's not the most sophisticated of comedians in one sense, but there is no denying that he's funny.

Comedy is very subjective and is therefore difficult to review as what I find funny, someone else will hate. With that in mind I would say that in my opinion this is one the funniest DVDs I have seen for a long time. I love the stupid gags and the fact they are much cleverer then people first think. There really is no one else like Tim Vine to compare him to. The jokes come thick and fast and there are so many I found I had to keep rewinding the disc to catch up on gags I didn't here as I was laughing so much. If you have seen Tim Vine on the telly and thought he was funny then this DVD is well worth buying.
