Amazon.co.uk Review

Zachary Levi was born to play Chuck. A computer nerd who finds himself thrust into the role of a Government secret agent, it???s a career-making role in a television show that???s got plenty to offer, whether you???re along for the action or the comedy.

Every episode from Chuck???s first season is gathered together in this set, and thus we get to see how a geek effectively became a wannabe-Jack Bauer. It goes without saying that Chuck has a lot of fun with its premise, and it happily asks you to suspend your disbelief as plausibility quickly goes out of the window. But so what? For when the action and comedy are as strong as they are with Chuck, that proves to be no price to pay whatsoever. Mix in the surprisingly high production values and the very witty scripts, and you have a surprise hit of a show that???s hard not to warm to.

One of the chief reasons for this is Levi in the title role, but Chuck also boasts good supporting turns from the likes of Adam Baldwin and Yvonne Strahovski. It also packs a surprising amount into its 13 episodes, and displays an ambition and verve that serves the show exceedingly well. What???s more, it also leaves you positively thirsting for more. Highly recommended. --Jon Foster

Chuck is funny. Really funny. The premise, though a little strange, is only a backdrop for some real character driven action comedy. The fight scenes remind me of those in Jackie Chan films, or the movie Johnny English.

The character of Chuck is lovable, and as such instills an instant feeling of empathy in the viewer. He feels more real than many of the characters in big budget dramas. Similarily, the two agents sent to protect him - Sarah and Casey are both easy to like, although in very different ways.

Agent Casey is hardened and emotionally distant, but his scary demeanor allows him to occasionally come out with classic lines, that neither the viewer nor Chuck can tell are sarcastic or not. (The most memorable to me being "I never joke about quiche". Ah, it's funnier when he says it.)
There are many other comic characters in there, such as the creepy duo Jeff and Leister, Chuck's lazy boss Big Mike or his sister's action hero boyfriend Devon (who Chuck calls "Captain Awesome").
Chuck's sister provides some emotional sub-plots as does the buy-more and Chuck's will they won't they relationship with Sarah.

All in all, Chuck is a funny, action packed and filled with refrences to nerd culture (which suits me fine) with a near perfect cast. Seriously, if you like; action; comedy; espionage; drama (ok so less this one); scifi or have any tastes that are remotely nerdy, then you will enjoy watching this. (Also, my mum likes Chuck, and she isn't really into any of the main concepts of Chuck)

I can't remember why I started watching this box set. I'm so behind on my 24, Lost and other fabulous shows I know I love. It might have been a good review or it might have been the fact that I think nerds are down right entertaining. It might have been both with a hot girl on the front cover thrown in for good measure. Whatever the reason I am so glad I did. I think I'm up to episode 9 which as it happens was the episode that made me enjoy the show enough that I would make the effort to write a review. It's the most enjoyable show I've seen in a long time. It knows how seriously to take itself. It's not up it's own butt but on the flipside has enough great characters, enough integrity and enough cinematography skill to engulf you into a very happy place. I won't say what happens but episode nine has a wonderful moment where the swithching of camera from character to character combined with an evocative piece of tunage left me dangerously close to staying up all night. Mostly unknown actors but I can't help but smile throughout and even though it's a comedy I genuinely care about what happens to them. The nerd's in the mega store make what would normally be the most monotimous job ever look like something I would absolutely strive for. The most enjoyable, technically light hearted entertainment out at the moment. Grab yourself a winner. Escapism at it's finest.

Chuck Bartowski's (Zachary Levi) life was going no where fast. True, he is head of the Nerd Herd at his local Buy More. But he lives with his sister Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and her boyfriend Devon (aka Captain Awesome, played by Ryan McPartlin). His best friend is Morgan (Joshua Gomez), a fellow nerd who also works at Buy More.

But things change drastically when Chuck gets an e-mail from former friend Bryce Larkin. The e-mail contains all the files of the intersect, the complete intelligence files of both the CIA and the NSA. And, to make things more exciting, Bryce has destroyed the original files.

All the information gets downloaded into Chuck's brain, making him a highly valuable government secret. So valuable that he has two bodyguards, Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski), a CIA agent who pretends to be Chuck's girlfriend, and John Casey (Adam Baldwin), a NSA who moves in next door to Chuck and takes a job at Buy More.

Whenever Chuck sees something from the intersect, he flashes on more information. Unfortunately, these flashes are at random and uncontrollable. And Los Angeles seems to be a hot bed of activity. Even with two agents guarding him, Chuck finds himself in over his head with his new life as a spy. Can he survive and keep his secret?

Yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking. The premise sounds unbelievable. And if you stop and think about it, it is. Fortunately, the show never gives you time to think. They cram everything into these episodes. There's action and intrigue, developing storylines involving the intersect and Chuck's past, romance with Sarah that she is not willing to admit is there, and plenty of laughs. Many of the laughs come from the sub-plots focused on the Buy More. But we also get laughs from Chuck's reaction to his new world.

But in case this all sounds disjointed, let me assure you it works beautifully. Everything is balanced and blended so that it seamlessly flows from one event to the next. And the characters are outstanding. Honestly, that is what holds all of this together. Even gruff Casey is fun when it comes down to it.

If, by some chance, you missed this show when it premiered last fall, correct that now. You'll be hooked by the time the second episode is over and watching them as fast as you can. Personally, I can hardly wait for season 2 to start.
