Amazon.co.uk Review

Kicking off with a jam-packed Christmas special and ending with a blockbuster extended closing instalment, Doctor Who?s fourth series since it was revived is a breathless, exciting one, that also boasts some exceptional episodes.

You get fourteen episodes for your money here, and the ones in particular to watch out for are the outstanding Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead double header, the almost single-location creepfest that is Midnight, and the trio of Turn Left, The Stolen Earth and Journey?s End that round off the series. In the midst of those is also one of the very best cliffhangers that Doctor Who has ever employed in its long and glorious history.

This is also the series of Doctor Who that introduces Catherine Tate as full-time companion Donna Noble, working alongside David Tennant?s Doctor across time and space. And it?s--against initial expectations--arguably the best combination since the show returned. Here, there?s no hint of romance between the pair, as they instead knuckle down to business, occasionally helped by the likes of Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and Jack Harkness (John Barrowman).

Let?s not forget too the collection of monsters we meet this time round. The daleks and Davros are the main attractions in Doctor Who Series 4, while the return of the Sontarans proves to be a bit of a disappointment. But, after viewing the series, chances are you?ll be counting shadows around you, and wary of getting on the wrong side of the Ood.

As with most series of Doctor Who, there are one or two bumpy episodes and missteps, but this is still unmatched at what it does, and finds the show in even more confident form than last time round. That, along with the immense rewatch value, is what makes this terrific piece of family entertainment such a compelling buy. --Simon Brew

Doctor Who? Not for me - Reviewed on 2008-11-27

The 'revamp' of Dr Who has been the biggest tv disappointment of the last few years. A once brilliant national institution that had clever, imaginative stories, genuine scares, atmosphere and charismatic lead actors has degenerated into a flashy, pop-culture spouting, juvenile embarrassment with none of the charm, wit or magic of the classic series. This fourth series is the worst of the lot, the stories range from confusing, to lame to just plain awful and the whole series is hampered by the atrocious Catherine Tate playing the most irritaitng companion ever. The over-rated David Tennant just cruises along on autopilot and does absolutely nothing with the role apart from acting like a geeky nerd. Fans of the classic series should steer well clear of this travesty - Dr Who ended in 1989, and this is just a fake.
very hit and miss with an awful finale - Reviewed on 2008-11-27

To start on a positive note, both David Tennant and Catherine Tate are very good in their roles and there are some clever stories in series 4 particularly the very well put together Turn Left.
However, the finale was truly a horrible mish mash of too much thrown in and it was easy to see that none of them (with the exception of Elisabeth Sladen) was taking it seriously. David Tennant asking the daleks to spare Donna because "she's my friend" really showed how little they thought about it. Even the daleks lacked their usual menace and to be honest it was an insult to viewers' intelligence.
There could have been a bit of a clash between the daleks and judoon, but that didn't happen.
The ever annoying Captain Jack just didn't take it seriously. What a shame they didn't kill him off...
And don't even start on the silly regeneration bit...credibility really out the window here..

What a shame the new series just doesn't have the dark edge of the original series...

Every new series of Doctor Who brings a new gripping story line, new characters, and another goodbye... and series four is no different.

The series starts of with the Doctor and Donna trying to crack the mystery around Adipose Industries but never quite meeting, always just missing each other, but finally they meet, and after narrowly escaping Miss Foster they decide to take her down.

The series just gets better from then on, with some old enemes, such as the sontarans, the ood, and daleks, and new enemies like Vespiforms, Vasta Nerada, and the Pyroviles. Not only does he meet and greet old enemies he reunites with old companions and meets a few new ones on the way.

Series Four will see the return of the Doctor (David Tennant), Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) and her mum, Francine, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen), Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), Jackie Tyler (Camille Conduri), Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke), and Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbons)

If the show is getting better and better with every series, you an imagine how good the next one will be.

Very disapointing.
As a collector i have all 3 of the other amazon exclusives, and with Davros big return (all be it not much screen action time)
This is wasted opportunity!

However the series is AMAZING, easily the bset one yet. Who fans old and new will LAP this up!
Brilliant, just Brilliant! - Reviewed on 2008-10-10

This is definetley the best series yet. Brilliant cast, brilliant acting, brilliant series! The whole series had everything. Humour, history, the doctor finds his daughter, he re-meets davros and the dalek; it has everything. The Doctor's assistant is Donna from the Christmas Special 2006. I thought she did superbly, better than expected. People who say this is expensive, that is partly true, but you get all the episodes (if you bought the 4 seperate DVD's the cost would be ??47.92) and you get the christmas special and confidential, so it is worth it.
So I recommend you get this and you will enjoy it!
