I'll start by stating that I'm certainly no review buff or movie critic, but nevertheless felt that this movie deserves a few more words of credit. If you can live with subtitles then please proceed - if not then look elsewhere for equally good, english language war movies. This film is not a classic on the scale of Private Ryan or numerous other great Hollywood war movies - it never tries to be. However, what you do get is a down to earth, rock solid story of a side to combat not often portrayed in main stream war movies. The youth of the actors, the bleak landscape and the expertly handled tension that runs throughout the film help create a very engaging film where the characters actually matter. John Wayne it aint, Das Boot...not quite, but anyone like myself who enjoys a variety of war movies must find space in the collection for this relatively low key, yet quality piece of Russian film making - even my wife sat through it and commented positively!
Unlike Come See , this one is not an Ugly Duckling, well worth buying. - Reviewed on 2008-12-16

May I pass comment by directing you to my review on the film by the same Studio "Come See"

Now that is a classic example of how one can waste an important historical message. By putting it's making in the hands of, on the evidence of it, a second rate director...IMHO avoid that one like the plague
Come and See is far superior! - Reviewed on 2008-11-14

I love films in general. I have a special taste for war films.

As the synopsis states, its about a team of Russian Special Forces going behing the lines in Poland. After about 30 Minutes you start to think what you're doing tonight and if you've had your teeth cleaned lately.

Quite frankly the main failing of this film is YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS. The reason for this is lack of story, acting and script.

On the bright side, the actions scenes are good as is the camerawork but really this film is a mess.

Go and see 'Come and See' instead.
A good, solid action film. - Reviewed on 2008-06-09

,The Star' is the heroic tale of a Soviet recon mission behind enemy lines during WW2. It is also my favourite Russian film. It's a solid, story-driven war film that literally "sticks to its guns" and doesn't lapse or morph into the ubiquitous Russian arthouse style that seems to permeate the genre. It wants to be, and is, an action film with convincing characters and a strong plot and it's nice to watch a "good old-fashioned" war film, that does what it says on the tin, without depressing morality messages or ultra-violent shock-tactics. We all know by now that war is hell - Let's just enjoy the movie.
A solid propaganda like war movie - Reviewed on 2008-05-18

Good war scenes, remembering The Iron Cross, but a little out to date point of view after Prestrojika. Perhaps correct title may be The RED Star
