On the face of it
The Godfather isn't an obvious movie to be made into a video game, what with it being more than thirty years old and staring a lot of middle age men in hats. On the other hand it is incredibly violent; and morally ambiguous enough to make an excellent period version of
Grand Theft Auto
which is exactly what this appears to be.
Although lots of missions from and inspired by the movie are promised you actually play a completely new character and control them over a period of ten years, between 1945 and 1955. During this time you get to take part in all manner of mobster type activities including managing protection rackets, assassination missions and full blown gang wars against the five different mob families in the game.
Despite all the big name stars lending their voices and faces to the game it's actually New York that seems to be the main star with a highly impressive, if somewhat sparsely populated, virtual city. The graphics are excellent, although it remains to be seen just how much variety there is to the missions, considering the game can't really go to some of the more surreal excess of Grand Theft Auto. So even if this isn't quite an offer you can't refuse, it's at least looking like one to be taken very seriously. --Harrison Dent

First of I think that its unfair to compare this game to a GTA:SA, mainly as The Godfather that game was released 2 full years after the former, but also because in my opinion no game copying the style of GTA will ever live up to its standards (with the possible exception of Saints Row), and this game is no exception. So for that reason I will judge it on its own merits.
The story line is well the godfather but instead of established characters from the film there is a new custom designed one. You do have a fair amount of customisation, you can include scars however I was a little disappointed by the fact that there are only about 5 hairstyles, 5 hair colours, 5 ears etc, and a very limited amount our outfits! The story line does not last long, I know that there are some other reviews that say they spent 40 hours on the game, but honestly after 5 I had completed the story and taken over 20 business' and 15 ventures. So give me another 5 and I guess I will be don of NYC.
The graphics engine is very good, and people react and get shot in a very realistic manner, there are limited NPC's, limited dialogue and, limited cars but this is no different than most games of the genre. The music did annoy me, as it was the same 2 or 3 pieces from the film repeated, and the interior of every club, and every shop was the same again this was annoying. I also found the game play slightly repetitive and the city was very small. There also seems to be very little structure to the game, by that I mean that the tutorials are short and don't really explain anything and unless you watch the very hard to find mob secrets you really have no idea which rival `gang' you should go after first'
Over all this is not a bad game, it's a period crime shoot `em up and is best left to those fans of the film (but then who isn't). It is fun to play, but don't expect too much, for those who are fans of GTA or Saints Row, you wont find anything that can rival storyline's or shear hours spent in from of the screen, but then it doesn't need to as its simply fun to work for the godfaher.

The thing that i like most about the game is that it follows the main plot of the movie while also creating a story of its own. In the game you will be able to play the missions from the movie and also do a few that were mentioned but you never saw them. For example you get to be the living crap out of the two guys that beat Bonasera's daughter and you get to sneak into Jack Woltz' mansion and do a little stealth stuff with a garrot wire until you finally reach his bedroom.
The game is kind of like gta with a free roaming mode but i wouldn't say they copied them, gta just created a new saught of thing for gangster games. You can do the usual stuff like on any other mafia game such as killing randoms, stealing cars, robbing banks and bombing places. You can get a good range of weapons and it is pretty cool being able to use 1930's tommy guns, pistols, shotguns and molotovs. The cars are a bit over the top but the handling of them is simple enough. A thing that will get to anyone though is how accurate New York is. You will find that you keep having to look at the huge map in the start menu to make sure that you don't get lost. It will take you about half an hour to get used to controls but once you learn them you are covered.
In the game you will encounter all the same guys you saw in the movie such as Clemenza, Rocco, Al Neri, Tom Hagen etc. The only issue i have with one of the characters is that he is not the same and i am talking about Michael. The guy does not have the same personality and is not the cool smooth Michael that we experienced in the film. James Cann and Robert Duvall reprise their roles and do an excellent job with the voices and so do a few other guys.
I would recommend this game to anyone who is a godfather freak unless you have something wrong with people making it into a game and even if you haven't seen the movie or don't like it, it is a great gangster game.

Now the reference to GTA is very very obvious and I don't have to spell it out to you do I? Just the free roam and drive around to get your mission. Besides that it involves individual ideas that are that you are a gangster in the mafia and you kill other gang members, extort businesses and somehow never get killed...which is kind of weird because the other characters die with a few shots.
Buy the game if you've bought GTA and like the film the Godfather. If not then don't buy it. You have the ability to think for yourself and don't need a review to tell you what to and not do.

this is such a cool game. not only do you get really in-depth control over what your character looks like, have controls that are really easy to pick up and an awesome storyline, but you have the ability to go anywhere and do anyhing, such as extorting businesses, bribing police, robbing banks, starting mob wars as well as really fun (and sometimes quite challenging)missions.
a really amazing free-roam game kind of like a gta game set in the 40s/50s without the over the top blood splatters.
if you get the opportunity to buy this then do it, it's an offer you cant refuse...
