Very disappointing... - Reviewed on 2006-08-23

I chose this Toshiba DVD player on the basis of other customer's positive reviews. Unlike some of the cheaper players, it was from a quality brand name which should count for something. However, after only a week the DVD player stopped working so I returned it to Amazon who very promptly replaced it whith a new one. The second one worked fine for a while, but after 12 months (typically just after it is out of warranty), it stopped playing some discs and the picture would often skip. Now it has stopped playing any DVDs altogether and I will have to outlay more money on a new DVD player. Steer clear of this one - you have been warned!!

We bought this unit to replace another Toshiba model which had begun to be problematical. Overall, I've always considered Toshiba a good brand, so I did not hesitate to choose the same brand again. However, right from the start, we experienced picture freezing on this unit. I've now replaced it with a Sony DVPN30 Multi region player, which seems much more reliable so far. Another problem with the Toshiba unit is that it seems quite noisy in operation.

...which isn't all bad news.
The good news is that it did so quick enough that Amazon will give me my money back. Now which one to choose instead?
I chose this one because some of the cheaper ones had a high failure rate/short life and I really didn't want the bother, and I expect this kind of thing to work for at least a decade. Well perhaps I was unlucky. It is hard to know the failure rate with no bad reviews out of 10, or the life in service yet.
It wasn't faultless while it was working. The picture froze from time to time, occasionally played jerkily, occasionally the picture was blocky, occasionally lost sound briefly. Perhaps thes are related to its eventual sudden complete loss of sound, and is not normal. But it did play Region 1 disks on my basic PAL TV, which was an important consideration in its choice.
But now it has lost (analog) sound output, suddenly and completely, via both output routes (SCART and audio jacks).

Bought a month or so ago, very happy with the player. Played U.S. DVDs right out of the box, no setting needed to be changed. Plays CDs no problem. picture quality is good, no complaints what so ever, specially for under 50 pound price.

I'm very happy with this DVD player. The device is small and nice looking. Easy to setup.
