Sex, drugs and rock n' roll, plus a murder mystery - Reviewed on 2008-06-18

This film is based on the true story of the Wonderland Avenue killings in Los Angeles, John Holmes (Val Kilmer) is an ex-porn star who gets involved with a group of drug dealers and that's where his problems start.

John Holmes and his new found friends decide to rob a crime boss of drugs, guns and cash by the name of Eddie Nash, but what they don't realise is who he is until they are actually doing the job, but they go ahead and finish to job anyway.

It does not take long for Eddie Nash to work out who has robbed him, but does he take his revenge?, or does someone else beat him to it?

This is a really good gritty film, with fine performances from the entire cast, for me Val Kilmer and Eric Bogosian (Eddie Nash) stand out most of all and are on excellent form, in Kilmers best performance I've seen from him.

The film is paced and told very well, it does show various people taking drugs, plus there's some violent scenes too, but for me at least nothing over the top, a very good film overall, well worth taking a look at.

the wonderland murders which happened in 1981 are infamous due to the violence that was excerted and the fact that adult movie star john holmes was alledged to have been part of it all,in this movie which stars val kilmer as john holmes,we get an insight into what led to this and a brutal look at what happened when eddie nashs' henchmen along with holmes entered the wonderland property to practice revenge on thiefs who stole from nash.
The film is interesting as we view a desperation for narcotics that leads to two betrayals from holmes,he cant be trusted,we see the story of the murders from two key points of view, one from holmes and the other from david lind and it isnt clear which version is true but the outcome is the same, this is a dark look at los angeles and the greed and murder that rage within, and of course its based on real events, just so you know.

Stylish, gritty and yet factual account of one the most notorious murders in recent Hollywood history - the Wonderland Avenue murders.

Even more fascinating is the fact that one of the alleged killers was the king of porn himself - John Holmes - who has always been branded as the "biggest" porn star - and was the inspiration for 1998 hit Boogie Nights.

As no one was ever convicted of the killings, the film creatively tries to explain the events that culminated in the Wonderland Murders.

Val Kilmer gives a truly compelling performance, and it's good to see him in a challenging role once more, with a great supporting cast, from Lisa Kudrow (from Friends), the beautiful Kate Bosworth, Dillon McDermot (TV's The Practice, Party Monster) and Josh Lucas (American Psycho, Hulk).

Director James Cox tells the story with startling energy, and is helped by a fantastic 80's soundtrack !

Reminiscent of 1995's Natural Born Killers, the reality of the Hollywood underbelly has never been quite so compelling - go get it, you won't be disappointed !
