I am a huge fan of the show and the first game was brillant I think this game is less than brillant the writer of the story is Chris Carter the person who wrote the show that doesn't help the game if the game was up to the standard of the first game it would imporve this game vastly and I hope if another game is produced they look and game number one and discard game number two and follow on the fisrt game story if you don't own the 1996 game and are looking for an x files game buy the 1996 one if you can find it or even ask here at Amazon.

aren't as good as a lot of other games, the game play is very
Silent Hill/Resident Evil-esque and the story is a bit sketchy...but its just great to be able to play with mulder and scully and hear their real voices, do autopsies as scully...do...well whatever it is mulder actually does...stand around and make wisecracks inevitably. I do prefer the first game which unfortunately is only available as a PS1 game but this game has its own merits...it reminds me of the first two seasons of the show, a bit low budget, a bit shoddy, lots of monsters and mutants...but that's what made it great and its the same with this game.

Most of the time you find yourself playing in the style of Resident Evil. As this game mainly focuses on flesh eating zombies. With a rare helping of much else. The start of the game is ok, then as you get further into say the next level you get a feeling of sameness right to the end of the game.

I can personally say I was not impressed with this game, having played the 1998 original version, that featured full motion interactive video -was available on pc and ps2.

The content of the game I found overal to not satisfy much of my 'search for the truth'. I would find myself in say Russia and then, suddenly for no reason would be in the field office. You find the game story board jumps from places quite alot without you realising and also the story concept, leaving you confused. I was anyway! I don't think the writer knew what path to take for this game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan of the X Files. I was so excited to hear of a PS2 game, having played the brilliant X Files game for PC, that I put this on my wishlist as soon as it came up for pre-order on Amazon. However, I've just taken it off again having played it this weekend - I just didn't enjoy it and felt I'd rather watch a few decent episodes than play this.

I've seen better graphics elsewhere (Splinter Cell, 007 Everything or Nothing) and quite frankly gameplay is irritating. The camera switches about unpredictably between game areas, so when you enter a new area you can't tell which way you're facing so you end up going back and forth (with the associated loading times). Getting the pickups is hit and miss and progress is slow. There's no damage indicator on the display - you have to go to the inventory to find out how hurt your character is. There's little variety in what you have to do - shoot zombies (lots if you're Mulder), run around a lot, pick up a few things. Reloading is slow and frequent. Playing as Scully you get to perform autopsies.... well, you do if you can work out how to do it!! To save the game you have to keep returning to a save point; located in one spot in the level - so there's a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to be done if you don't want all your hard work to be lost. In the end I just couldn't be bothered, it was all too tedious, even with a walkthrough!

It isn't all bad, hence the 2 stars - the inventory is pretty good and you have the ability to zoom in on objects it contains, plus you can search them (if you pick up a box or package you might find a first aid kit inside). It's chock full of X Files series references and there are some interesting extras. Plus the music of course.

All in all, I was disappointed with this game; I will probably buy it eventually but I wouldn't pay more than a tenner for it. I shall go back to playing James Bond, Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones.

If you like Resident Evil type games then this is worth a look. The presentation is good with the story cut into 3 Episodes and playable as either Mulder (more action orientated) or Scully (more puzzles). Personally, I used a walkthrough for the majority of the game having got stuck on some of the puzzles as well as a few other niggles; see bad points below. If you're a fan of the t.v. series you should enjoy this with numerous referrences to past episodes as well as many of the characters appearing throughtout the game.
good points: good story, true to the t.v. series
bad points: not sure what to do next, no choice of difficulty, awkward aiming, frequent loading.
Lifespan: 9 hours with Scully plus can then go through with Mulder.
