Hi
I know the old version of BG is not really up to the production values of the New Series. But hey its nostalgic fun, and far better then anything else around at its time on TV such as Lost in Space, Buck Rodgers etc. For me I really enjoyed looking back over this old icon from the 70s & 80s. Its a must have for my collection.

I read in a sf magazine in the late 70s an interview with Lorne Greene (Adama) that on getting the part in the old BSG he went into a bookstore and asked for the 10 best SF novels ever written. He had no knowledge of literary sf and wished to educate himself. Depending on what the bookshop actually gave him, he must have realised very quickly what a complete Turkey he was going to have to act in. But maybe he had already signed the contract, poor man.

Don't bother with this. Please check out the new BSG it is far far better made, infinitely better acted and above all far better scripted.

This original BSG is lame by comparison and scripted by morons, it's a pity it lasted as long as the few episodes it did. Even worse was the attempt at redoing it in 1980. I am a big SF fan but found both these series to be amongst the worst sf ever made for TV. Save your money check out some quality thought provoking SF like The new BSG, The original twilight zone, the original trek series 1 & 2 and Babylon 5. Or broaden your horizons and even fork out for Tarkovsky's "solaris" Kubricks "2001".

If you want the TV to be an idiot box without thoughtful, insightful drama then this is for you.

As others have noted, the first three episodes in this box set are joined together into a single long film, which is equivalent to the 1978 movie that's available as a separate purchase.

However, what's interesting is that the version in this box set is considerably longer than the separate release: I think about 9 or 10 minutes longer.

The most obvious difference is the presence of an Epilogue at the end that shows what happens to Baltar. However, there are other extra or longer scenes interwoven into the entire film, such as an explanation of where the Cylons came from (it wasn't humans who created them).

All in all, if you buy this box set, don't waste your money on the separate 1978 movie release as well. This version is 'the same but better'.

This series is a lot of fun for kids, I watched it when I was one and remember I loved it. Now however, it's too easy to shoot holes in the stories, it's just not as well written as English SF for example. Another let-down is that the box states it's the "complete series" but at least two episodes seem to be missing. One where Starbuck gets stranded on a planet with a Cylon Centurion, and one where Galactica (and the cylons) reach earth.

I would just like to mention this boxset includes Battlestar Galactica: The Movie which is also for sale separately. I incorrectly bought both.

In the boxset, it is the first three episodes "Saga of a Star World" which are joined together into one viewing. The only difference I can see, is this boxset version has a short epilogue scene at the end.
