Do it, dammit!
Series 1 of 24 is all about tension, it builds slowly and plays out with a real sense of menace occasionally bursting into frantic gunplay and explosive set pieces.
A threat is made against a balck presidential candidates life and Jack Bauer is called away from a chess game to see whats going on. Coincidence of coincidences on the same night, his daughter goes missing giving Kiefer Sutherland the chance to play the most stressed out character in television history. He sweats, jitters, over zelously blinks and shoots his way through the longest day of his life, perfectly conveying tension with every fibre of his existence. Great performances come from Dennis (David Palmer) Haysbert and Sarah (Nina Myers) Clark in both seasons but Jack always steals the show.
Season 2 is a very different animal. Where Day 1 is all about building tension Day 2 is a non stop action packed thrill ride with Jack suddenly turning into a machiavallian monster who will do anything and everything to save LA from nuke wielding terrorists. It's bizzare, unrealistic and a lot of fun. Although the two days are different in style they're both essential viewing and Season 2 comes with some great commentaries, making of's and extended scenes including Jack fighting with a really tall guy. The box looks great in your collection too.
To revisit the first chapter and to be reminded of the plane scene, only serves to want more.
It is the realisation that there are another 23 to go stops the viewer from becoming a social hermit.
I cannot wait until the shorter winter days.
Although the whole family viewed the series, this is my treat!
Lucky USA, they start the third series on the 28th October!
