good, but not great - Reviewed on 2004-12-17

The first mountain of ssx 3 is an astonishing peice of level design. The race sections are well thought out, perfect for high speed racing with just the right number of obsticals. The freestyle is also well designed and is perfect for tricks.
however, from the second mountain on, it all goes downhill ( quite litterally!) The second and third mountain, are poorly designed, and lack the magic of the first. If the developers had pushed, and added bigger jumps, and more avalanches, plus a few less obstickes, then this game could have been great.
This game is good, but let down somewhat by the end. Buy it by all means- you will be rewarded by an entertaining game, but just dont exspect a tony hawks beater.

Having played the first 2 SSX games on the Playstation 2, I can say that SSX 3 is a great improvement on what has gone before. New features include:

- One massive mountain, divided into 3 peaks, which you can explore freely in between events.
- Expanded Uber trick system, including rail tricks and monster tricks.
- Earn cash through finding secrets and winning events. Spend cash on rider stat's improvements, new gear to wear, music tracks and art.
- Greater variety of events, including big air and rival challenges.

SSX is a lot different to all the other snowboarding games out there such as Amped. SSX throws away realism and instead focuses on massive tricks, imaginative courses and high speed. I personally love the arcadey feel to the game and simplicity of controls, but if you are after a more serious game this may not be the one for you.

The parts I love the most are the new ability to explore the mountain at will and find hidden items/challenges. It's great to just cruise with no real goal and see what you can do. Also, I was very impressed by the amount of customisation you can do with the riders. There are hundreds of things to buy and wear, from new boots to skeleton heads.

My main complaint with this game is that you have to build up each rider separatley. If you unlock all the peaks with Kaori (the cutest rider!), you still have to do it all for the rest of the riders. This extends the gameplay, but makes it very repetitive. However, if you want to play a 2 player game with maxed out character stats, you must earn all those stats for each of the riders you will use. This took me about 12 hours for each rider!

Despite these flaws, this is still an excellent game that is fun for quick blasts or when you have your mates over. See you on the peak!

why buy this when there is 1080 avalance? - Reviewed on 2004-02-19

ok i had previously brought ssx and ssx tricky on ps2 and didnt think they could be beaten so when ssx3 was anounced i was quite excited the only mistake i made was that i brought it at the same time as 1080 avalance, after finishing 1080 i started on ssx3 and all the fauts with the game just stuck out.

ssx3 vs 1080 avalanch

gameplay- ok so your nicly going down the mountain doing a couple of tricks but you seam to forget you racing people because your mind switches off now compaired to 1080 you rush down the course going so fast the camera shakes constantly aware that one error and the computer will fly past you.

course design- ssx3 is all over the place half the time you have no idea where you are where as 1080 has nice tight courses that are extreamly well layed out.

graphics- when playing ssx it looked like it wasnt quite finished, 1080 is spot on

avalanches- the avalanches in ssx are good as long as you dont play 1080. in ssx a bit of snow chases you for a short time,in 1080 its just like that bit in XXX where vin desil snow boards down a avalanch one error and the screen will be ingolfed with snow also 1080 has rock slides and earthquakes.

ok so ssx3 is a good game but i would chose 1080 over it any day

After the tremendous game that was SSX I would admit to being quite disappointed with its sequel SSX Tricky. Needless to say that when I heard that the formula had changed for the latest Snowboarding game I was a little aprehensive. As it turned out there was no need. The opening FMV had me grinning stupidly and the game did not let me down. Instead of choosing whether to race or try "showoff" mode as in the other two, you are dumped on the mountain, with only the radio to keep you company. The graphics are amazing and the gameplay oozes quality. Needless to say, anyone even remotely interested, and most people who are not should at least try it. You'll be hooked!
