Editorial Reviews and Product Descriptions

Amazon.co.uk Review

Busted in the 1950s for marijuana possession, it's possible to discern the long-term effects of the weed in this, the actor's sole foray into the world of pop: an album of Carribean party tunes designed (presumably) to nestle comfortably between the fondue set and the cocktail shaker in one's swingin' bachelor pad. Shrugging off the existential melancholy he perfected in such noir classics as Out Of The Past, Mitchum strives to reinvent himself as a tropical hipster, a cockeyed party-guy; and indeed, his genuine fondness for the genre is apparent throughout--though it must be said, his lugubrious vocals sit somewhat uneasily with the sunny disposition of the music, particularly on rambling diatribes like "What Is This Generation Coming To?" File between William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, kitsch fans. --Andrew McGuire

If you've heard the originals by people like Lord Kitchener et al this album is a straightforward cover version of those classic tunes but listened to 'stand alone' it certainly washes it's face adequately, especially if you like Robert Mitchum. A better buy might be the 'That Man' album by Mitchum which contains all the tracks on this CD plus an album's worth of material recorded in the late 60's including Ballad of Thunder Road and a version of Little Ole Wine Drinker Me which (I think) even charted in the States. Good stuff!

When someone mentions Bob Mitchum, music is not what the mind conjures up,
but if Bob hadn't made it big on the silver screen then a career in music
would have been an option.

The CD "Calypso is like so" shows a whole new side to Bob's character.
The music is typical of Calypso, self-deprecating and funny. With great
tracks like "Mama look at Boo Boo" and "From a logical point of view" this
CD is a must have.

This is a great introduction to calypso music by an actor with a greatly under-rated voice. As calypso should be, he does it with style and humour.

I was introduced to this by my father, who was born and raised in Jamaica, in 1960, when I was 11 years old. I have loved calypso and all things Jamaican ever since.

If you want to experience a slightly different take on calypso, listen to this and enjoy.
