With this album the Stones had a go at being comtemporary - and it's not a bad attempt. In fact, the album is not so very far from the Stones we know. Part of the album has the English whimsy of part of predecessor Between The Buttons and part shows what was to come on Beggars Banquet. What does make this album stand out is that Brian Jones is all over it. Even on the not so good tracks, the memorable bits are Brian Jones add-ons.
Half the tracks on the album are excellent, namely: "Citadel", In Another Land", "2000 Man", "She's A Rainbow", and "2000 Light Years From Home". One is English tongue in cheek - "On With The Show", while "Gomper" and "The Lantern" are interesting but don't quite work, and "Sing This Altogether" is an overlong jam that doesn't have enough substance to make the grade.
The album is not quite a 4 star one, maybe 3.75 would be a better recommendation. But, 5 stars for Mr Jones.

Disregard the myth (mainly among some critics) that this album is a weak copy of Sgt Pepper. True, it was inspired by Pepper. (Good idea!) However to say it is "woefully misguided" or other such rubbish is to miss the fact that this album on its own is one of the top ten psychedelic albums of all time. If it was by any other band, it would be hailed as such. Unfortunately, many critics fail to see (and hear this) and continue to perpetuate the myth that the Stones "made a mistake" based on comparisons with the other Stones albums. Absolute bollocks! Listen for yourself: "She's a Rainbow", "2000 Light Years from Home", "Citadel", "In Another Land", "Gomper". Classic brain warpers on par with S.F. Sorrow, Pepper, Floyd's Piper, The End - Introspection. It is, in fact, as brilliant in its own way as Bleed, Banquet, Exile. Check out this baby at once!

For me, this album is as important as St.Peppers. It's much more psychedelic than Pepper ever was. It's like Brian said that it was about fortunetelling. He hated it, but he had no other choice than to really go into. Listen to 2ooo man. And you'll know wath I mean. Random cumputer 1967.

A pity the Stones never did more psychedelic music.I mean this was ahead of its time when you consider Kula Shaker explored the same area in the 90s.
The Beatles could have made this one and as a psychedelic album its as good as any from the West Coast

I've got nearly all of the Stones albums and I've listened to them since I was in my mid teens. I'm now 31 and the album which I still find the most entertaining is 'Their Satanic Majesties Request'.
It's nice to hear a raw, underproduced record for a change and they should have spent more time producing their own records after this one.
It's an album which I tend to listen to alone in the car as when i've put it on at a party, people just wonder what the hell you're doing, especially when you hear bill stoning part way through it!
I'd give it a 5 cause I just keep going back to it!
