Amazon.co.uk Review

Mixing first-person shooting action with suitably threatening creatures from the Jurassic past, Turok: Evolution is a welcome step forward in the franchise. Its secret? Nothing major, just that the developers have gone back to what made the series so fun in the first place. This latest sequel is a clear beneficiary of that decision.

Thus, the game's action returns to the Lost Lands, albeit with smarter visuals and some excellent, moody audio effects. The gameplay itself, while primarily action based, does reward occasional stealth, although more fun will be gleamed from the broadened arsenal of hardware and choosing when to use them. There's a lot to explore, and the enemy AI puts up a far harder fight than the game's predecessors, all of which count as sizeable marks in the plus column.

Turok: Evolution is no classic, though. Its levels are frequently a little too sprawling, and despite the generally enjoyable gameplay, a little more urgency wouldn't have gone amiss. That said, it's a title that's going to reward expectant fans of the franchise, and while it's not cutting edge stuff, Turok: Evolution does offer good value for money, and a challenging, lasting single player mode, with an equally enjoyable multi-player segment bolted on.

Bottom line: it's a flawed game, but still an entertaining one. And thanks to a generous smattering of levels, tight controls and a sizeable game world, there's enough on the disc to keep the player immersed for some time. --Simon Brew

This game is very good, in a strang way. This is because you need to think things through carefully in the little time the game gives you.It is great fun, the gore and the way everything dies is hilarious, i will never get bored of knocking trees down onto dinosaurs! However, sometimes it gets too difficult and you hjave to use cheats. Overall a good game to play for a few days. Buy it or rent it and you'll see what i mean, especially if you get to chapter 3!

Turok is a decent title for ps2, but i find it lacks in the graphics department, gameplay doesent feel smooth and silky like the majestic timesplitters 2 it feels rather sluggish and disjointed and VERY jerky in a room full of enemies when you are using the AWESOME minigun. also multiplayer lacks any real sparkle, its Slow, Jerky, 2 player ONLY and NO bots or decent modes. But looking at the brighter side, its a very long game which gives VFM.

I thankfully only hired this (on the basis of fond memories playing it on a friend's N64 a few years ago). The dinosaurs look and move like they're made out of Duplo. The environments are dreary as hell - not even in the same league as the original Tomb Raider. The controls are clumsy, awkward and frustrating, leading to an overall feeling that the character you're playing has had 7 pints of Stella before venturing in to the jungle. Maybe I should have given it more than the hour or so I did, but the only positive feeling I had as I switched off the console and put down the gamepad was relief that I hadn't wasted ?? on it.
